Thanks for sharing! My horse, Smokey, usually lives in RBI land. I try to give him lots of time to get good with the idea of riding, but it is really easy to push him when there are others waiting on me (ie, when departing on a trail ride). I've learned to give myself tons of extra lead time. Just allowing him to observe a saddle sitting out on a fence for awhile, or to see that the trailer has moved, helps his head. Also, the tedious process of putting on his not-so-Easy-Boots gets him mentally ready to roll!

I probably push Cody (LBI) to be saddled faster than I should. It makes him crabby to even have the saddle placed gently on his back and he will sometimes bite the fence (though he won't bite me). I try to take things really slow.. He is much better about me mounting him from the fence bareback.

Thanks again. :-)

I loved the RESPECT manual for the philosophical approach to the topic. And something I've learned with Cricket - earning respect changes at every level. What I understood as respectful in L1 is no longer respectful in L3/L4. No wonder they call it a journey! We are at a point of increasing our respect in order to move into L4 and it's challenging me in ways I didn't imagine.
