‘Men in Black’ and horsemanship

men in black posterDo you remember that scene in the first part of Men in Black where Will Smith is taken to the secret headquarters and given several tests of his suitability for joining the organization? One of the tests takes place in a shooting range where a bunch of ferocious-looking monsters pop up. All the other candidates are firing at everything, but Will Smith takes a nanosecond to take in the situation, and only shoots the little girl target, the last one to pop up.

This transcript will refresh your memory if you’ve seen it. If not, you have to watch it to truly understand how FAST the targets pop up and get shot.

Chief Zed (Rip Torn)

May I ask why you felt little Tiffany deserved to die?

Officer Edwards (Will Smith)

She was the only one that actually seemed dangerous at the time, sir.

Chief

How’d you decide that?

Officer

First, I was going to pop this guy hanging from the streetlight…but I realized he’s just working out. How’d I feel if somebody bust me in my ass while I’m on the treadmill?

Then I saw this snarling beast guy and I noticed he had a tissue in his hand and realized he’s not snarling, he’s sneezing. Ain’t no real threat there.

Then I saw Tiffany. I’m thinking, eight-year-old white girl, middle of the ghetto, bunch of monsters at night, with quantum physics books. She about to start some shit, Zed.

She’s about eight. Those books are way too advanced for her. If you ask me, she’s up to something. Honestly, I’d appreciate it if you eased up off my back about it.

Or do I owe her an apology?

That was a good shot though, right?

That’s how I feel about reading Rocky and responding correctly. I have to get that fast, and be consistent, and also keep aware of our environment and how to show him that I will protect, lead, manage and otherwise keep him safe and hopefully also comfortable and enjoying himself.

I admit that I thought I’d be better at all that by now. Must be harder than it looks.
